Ultimate Muumuu Challenge

Filed under: wearables — Nicole Marie @ 11:03 pm

I bought this size 12 polyester muumuu at a thrift store for $2.99:

Reconstruction is lovely because you can skip lots of tedious steps. For this dress, I left the neckline and back zipper intact because I don’t care for making necklines and zippers. I also kept the pleats from the original, so I didn’t have to do any damn pleating, which is time consuming.

After much trimming and reassembling, I came up with this little 70’s hippie dress:recon 2

A close up of the dress:

So, I’ve got two reconstructed pieces down, but the other two articles I bought are a bit more challenging.

First, I have this alluring spandex top covered in large sequins.  If only I were a figure skater…

Next, I have a turtle neck.  But it’s not just any old turle neck, some crazy crafter got her (his?) glitter-splintered hands on it.

I’ve been stumped on these for a while now; any ideas are welcome.

  1. wow, what an amazing transformation! As for the other 2, I would ditch the sleeves on the spandex top and give it little skinny straps - would look cool with jeans. The turtle neck is a bit more tricky…

  2. The turtle neck might make a nice tank top/cami. Cutting out most of the sparkle stripes would leave a nice border along the neck line. Two of the stripes could be left intact to make the shoulders.

  3. wow - that dress transform was great! What type of fabric was it? I looks like it’s kind of slippery.

the other two… yikes! i had some ideas for the sequined shirt, but then i looked at the sequins and felt a bit sick…. good luck!

  4. What a fun site! Good for you. OK, glitter stripe top? Why not turn it upside down and use the decorated yoke as the top of a funky halter - use as much black as you need on the bottom to keep it decent. You could even use the turtleneck tube as the strap to go around your neck - kind of like a chunky choker strap! Thanks for the chance to stretch my brain!
